"Mary Hale...was born in Hinsdale, New Hampshire, to Mary Prudden Scranton and Dr. Gardner Browne, a Congregational clergyman who later became a homeopathic physician and an ardent believer in phrenology. When she was small, her father and mother were divorced--an unheard-of thing in those days, especially for a minister. In time both were remarried-her father to Ada Merrill, her mother to Philemon Scranton of Madison, Connecticut. Meanwhile, the little Mary was sent to live with a grandfather she had never seen (in fact, only an adopted grandfather, since he, in turn, had adopted her own mother). This stern individual, Erastus Scranton, also a Congregational minister, lived in Burlington, Connecticut."
