Samuel A Rayhill enlisted on Dec 29, 1863, at Rossville, Walker County, Georgia, with Company D, 38th Regiment, Indiana Volunteers, Union Army. He was taken prisoner near Sister's Ferry, Georgia, on Jan 27, 1865. He was paroled on Apr 28, 1865, and was mustered out on Jun 16, 1865. While in service, he contracted pneumonia and bronchitis and never fully recovered. In the pension application his mother, Julia Ann Smith Rayhill, submitted she states that Samuel spent time in the "Andersonville Rebel Prison" - although I have found no further documentation.

Apparently Samuel never worked again after returning home from the war. He was told that it would be good for his health to go west. While traveling with his sister and brother-in-law, who were looking to stake out a homestead out west, he succumbed to his illnesses. Samuel died in the Missouri territory on Nov 20, 1865.
