US Congressman. Born in New Brunswick, New Jersey, he attended Rutgers College there before being compelled by family circumstances to leave early and work in his fathers's law office. He then worked for the Hudson County National Bank, eventually rising to President and was associated with it until his passing. His elected age 23 to the New Jersey State Legislature in 1852 began his political career, which would see him hold a number of state, county, and city offices. In 1872 he was a delegate from New Jersey to the 1872 Democratic National Convention that nominated newspaper editor Horace Greeley for President. In 1874 he ran as a Democrat to represent New Jersey's 7th District in the United States House of Representatives, defeating incumbent Republican Congressman Isaac W. Scudder. He served in Congress from March 1875 to March 1879, and declined in 1878 to run for re-election. In 1880 however, he elected to run again for the seat, and defeated incumbent Republican Congressman Lewis A. Brigham. His second term lasted from March 1881 to March 1883, and when his term was over he again declined to be renominated for the office. He returned to his bank president position, and served on a commission to reform New Jersey schools. He passed away at his home in Jersey City, New Jersey in 1889.
