Physician. At the height of his career, Baron Takagi served as the Navy Surgeon General. At his advice, the navy adopted bread as a key element of its dietary provisions, thus earning a nickname, "the naval bread surgeon." As a result, beriberi decreased sharply among naval personnel. This was in contrast to the army, who did not adopt a successful strategy to prevent beriberi as quickly, until after experiencing difficulties with beriberi during a key campaign of the Russo-Japanese War.
