US Congressman, US Senator, US Diplomat. Born in St. Genevieve, Missouri. Served as an officer in the United States Army during the 1832 Black Hawk War. Elected as a Congressional Delegate in the House of Representative from the Territory of Iowa, serving from 1840 to 1846. After Iowa was admitted as a State into the Union, he was elected as one of Iowa first two Senators in the US Senate, serving from 1848 to 1855 (George Wallace Jones served as the other). His election made him the first United States Senator to be born west of the Mississippi River. He resigned his seat after being appointed as US Minister to Spain, serving at that post from 1855 to 1859. Ran for Iowa Governor in 1859, but lost to Samuel J. Kirkwood. Served as Mayor of Burlington, Iowa from 1874 to 1875. He was the son of Henry Dodge, who served as Colonel of the 1st US Dragoons, and as a Senator from Wisconsin during the time his son was in the Senate. To date, they are the only father-son combination to serve simultaneously as United States Senators. Dodge County in Nebraska is named for him (in honor of his support of the Kansas-Nebraska Act). Dodge County in Minnesota is named for him and his father.
