A graduate of Columbia University, New York, the University of California and a German university, Dr. Stamper taught in Stockton High School before coming in 1896 to Chico, where he successfully taught mathematics to hundreds of California teachers.
Death came unexpectedly, although Dr. Stamper had been ailing continuously for some months. Only last Tuesday in a letter to Miss Sarah Doyle, his co-worker in mathematics at the State Normal, he wrote of his plans for the coming year, and said he would be present at the opening of the Normal School next month.
Besides his ability as an educator, Dr. Stamper was an enthusiastic supporter of athletics, and during his early days was a crack tennis player, competing and winning games with some of the country’s foremost experts.
Dr. Stamper always took an active interest in public welfare and church work. He was a member of the governing board of the Presbyterian Church.
The deceased is survived by a widow, Mrs. A.W. Stamper, who was at his bedside when he died, and two daughters, Miss Donna and Miss Ruth Stamper. He was forty-five years old, a native of San Joaquin county.
The body will arrive in Chico tomorrow, and arrangements will then be made for the funeral, which will probably take place Friday.
