Joseph F. Johnston, 92, of Orchard Ave., Altoona, formerly of Dean, died Sun., Nov. 7, 2010 at Altoona Hospital. He was born in Dean to Harry & Henrietta 'Etta' (Plunkett) Johnston. He married Annie Adams on April 3, 1945 in St. Augustine. Survived by wife; 8 children: Ruth (Ken) Keller of Newry; twins: Margaret M. Storm of Chest Springs and Martha (John 'Jack') Watters of Hollidaysburg; Richard (Barbara Hartranft) of Altoona; Ronald (Tina Gionia) of Altoona; Raymond of Altoona; Lucy (Steve) Dileo of Altoona and Janet (John) Cassidy of Hollidaysburg; 12 grandchildren; 14 gr. grandchildren and 5 siblings: Mary Johnston of Altoona; Edgar of Altoona; Alfred of Ebensburg; Linus of Altoona and Theresa Pfeffer of Duncansville. Predeceased by son-in-law, Dave Storm; brothers: Clarence, Regis, Robert, Albert and John; and sister, Rita Johnston. Mr. Johnston was a TSgt., U.S. Army, WWII Army veteran who was awarded the European African Middle Eastern Service Medal with a Silver Star, Bronze Star and Legion of Merit. Joe served during the campaigns in Algeria-French Morocco, Tunisia, Sicily, Normandy, northern France and the Rhineland. He worked in the clay mines in Dean and Blandburg until 1953, then worked for L.S. Fiore Construction for 25 years as a mason before retiring in 1979. He was a member of Patton VFW; Loretto American Legion; Altoona Disabled Veterans; K.ofC. 9622 Frugality and Assembly 0916 (Bishop Garvey 4th Degree Color Corps.); charter member of the Holy Name Society at St. Mary Magdalen Church in Frugality and member of St. John Evangelist Catholic Church, Lakemont. Stevens Mortuary, Altoona. Committal with military rites, St. Monica Cemetery, Chest Springs.
