          cumbs to Long Continued Ill-
                ness Sunday Evening

In Early Days Was President First
              National Bank, Later Reg-
                      ister of Deeds

Halsey J. Spencer, a well known citizen of Brainerd, passed away at his home, 307 North Broadway, on Sunday evening. Death came peacefully as he had been suffering from a complication of diseases for a half year or more and in his weakened condition he passed away as though falling asleep.
The deceased was born in New York state and would have been 61 years old next January. He came to Brainerd in the early seventies and in 1876 married Miss Lillian Ferris and to them one child was born, W. A. Spencer, who with his mother, survives the deceased.
After his marriage the deceased had again returned to his former home in New York, remaining there until William Ferris died in 1882. He came to Brainerd and became president of the First National bank and acted as its president until A. F. Ferris was elected president by the directors of the bank.
After that he engaged in the agricultural implement business and then became cashier of the Northern Pacific state bank. Later he engaged in the spring water business.
He was elected register of deeds of Crow Wing county and filled that difficult position with credit and distinction, holding the office six or eight years. He filled the post of city clerk of Brainerd for many years.
Mr. Spencer then became associated with the Mahlum Lumber company, acting as vice president. As an accountant he was especially valuable and his fine penmanship made it a pleasure to read his books.
The funeral will be held Tuesday afternoon at 2:30 from the residence, 307 North Broadway, Rev. G. Phil Sheridan of the First Congregational church officiating. Their many friends, and they are legion, extend to the bereaved family their deepest sympathy. (Brainerd Daily Dispatch, 18 November 1912, p. 3, c. 1)
