Athletic Chief Dies

Carl Sparks, 61, Puyallup
athletics director for Puyallup
schools, and former resident
of Onalaska, died Tuesday in
a Seattle hospital.
He was born in Hayburn,
Idaho, Feb. 18, 1908, and lived
in Onalaska from 1923 until 1928
when he was graduated from
Onalaska High School. He was
football coach at Onalaska from
1932 until 1939. During 1934-1939
his team was undefeated. He
was athletic director of the
Puyallup Public Schools for 13
years and had been head coach
of Puyallup High School for 18
years. He retired from active
coaching in 1956.
Survivors include his widow,
Doris, at home; two sons,
Clayton and Douglas, both of
Puyallup; a daughter, Mrs.
Roger (Carolyn) Plante
Seattle; his Mother, Mrs. Olive
Sparks, Los Gatos, Calif.; four
brothers, Clark, San Luis
Obispo, Calif.; Harold, Cottage
Grove, Ore.; Robert and Don,
both of Sunnyvale, Calif.; three
sisters, Mrs Lyle (Pearl)
Cleveland, Los Gatos, Calif.;
Mrs Clifton (Opal) Lester,
Onalaska; and Mrs. James
(Ruby) Meyer, Centralia, and
six grandchildren.
Memorial services for Mr.
Sparks will be held Saturday, 11
a.m., at the First United
Prebyterian Church, Puyallup.
The family requests donations
be to the Carl Sparks Memorial
Scholarship Fund, Centralia
College or the Heart Fund.
