Jonathan Hendershot was born in Monroe County, Ohio, January 3, 1828. He was a minister in the Christian Church.
He was the son of Samuel and Ruth Pittman Hendershot. He married Martha J. Powell in Monroe County, Ohio, November 6, 1851. Children: Mary M., born Jan. 14, 1853, died Jan. 1855; Albert P., Oct. 3, 1854; Benjamin F., Sept. 7, 1856, William H., Nov. 21,1858; Mathias L., Jan. 11, 1861; Samuel G., Jan. 5, 1863; Caroline B., Mar. 14, 1865; Hannah R., Jan. 19, 1867; Martha J., July 8, 1869. Mr. Hendershot invented a sewing machine on which he took out a patent Oct. 30, 1882. He was formerly a postmaster in Wetzel County and also a postmaster at Shirtzville, Wirt County.
