Calvin C. Chase was born in Bureau county, Illinois, June 17, 1842, and died in Chicago, Illinois, January 22, 1918. At the beginning of the Civil War he enlisted in Company B of the 64th of Illinois and served as a sharp shooter until wounded in the battle of Corinth in 1862. After several months in the hospital he received an honorable discharge and returned to civil life. He came to Carroll county, Iowa, in 1873. After a residence of about twenty years in this county, he removed with his family to Pocahontas county, Iowa. In 1900 he retired from active life and made his home in Marathon, Iowa.
In 1877 he was united in marriage to Miss Hulda Hart, of Carroll, Iowa and for more than forty years they walked together in the pathway of life, until death called him from hiw earthly home, leaving the wife and two daughters to mourn his death.
Funeral services were held in Carroll at the home of Mr. and Mrs. George Guy, North Main street, January 25th, Rev. W. C. Monroe officiating.
(Mrs. George Guy was a sister of Calvin's wife,Hulda Chase).
