Albert Spiers, 82, who lived all his life on a farm northwest of Traer where he was born, died at 11 o'clock Tuesday morning in Allen Memorial hospital. He had been hospitalized since December 18 for old ago disabilities, but death was hastened by an attack of pneumonia.
Services were held in the Erickson Funeral Home Thursday afternoon, conducted by the Rev. Donald Light, pastor of the Congregational church. Mrs. LeRoy Dinsdale sang, accompanied at the organ by Ruth Thomas. Six nephews of Albert, Robert W., James, David and Sandy Speirs, George and Andrew J. Addison, served as pallbearers. Mr. and Mrs. Merrill Wood and Mr. and Mrs. Don Tomlinson were in charge of flowers. Interment was in Buckingham cemetery.
Albert was the eighth in the family of nine children of Alex and Nancy Blackburn Speirs, and was the last member of that family to be taken. He was born in Buckingham township May 28, 1882. The brothers and sisters preceding him in death were William Spiers, Mrs. Mary Atkinson, Mrs. Agnes Addison, Alex Jr. (familiarly known as Sandy), James, John, Robert, and Jesse Spiers.
Albert never married, but during the last 19 years a nephew, Robert, a son of Robert Speirs Sr., lived with Albert and carried on the farm work. Albert was held in high regard by his neighbors and by many more in the Traer community and will be missed. Of the nine children of Alex and Nancy Speirs, three lived to be more than 80 years old, and all but one were 70 or more when they were taken.
