Edward was born in Battersea Surrey. He was the son of William Cheesman and Ellen Hally.

Edward had first arrived in Gillingham, Kent in 1901, he was serving aboard the HMS Dasher. He had been orphaned in 1891 after suffering the deaths of both his parents with in a short period of time. Following their deaths he lived in the St. Mary's orphanage in London. Edward had four other siblings, Willam, Matilda, Rose and Mary. Their parents death tore this family apart. Tragically these siblings would never see each other again, a tremendous loss for not only Edward but his brothers and sisters as well. In 1911 Edward was still living in Gillingham working as a leading stoker with the Royal Navy. In September of 1913 Edward married Elizabeth Florence Jackson. Their son Eric Edward was born in 1916 and their daughter Molly (Mary) in 1923. The family would eventually move to 31 Watling Avenue in Chatham. He was eventually discharged from the Navy with a disability pension after twenty two years service.

Tragically on July 11th 1929 Edward and Elizabeth's only son Eric Edward Cheesman perished in the Gillingham Park Fete Tragedy. Eric was burned to death in a fire fighting demonstration which had gone horrifically wrong. Edward's wife Elizabeth and his 6 year old daughter Molly were witness to Eric's fate that night. Edward was not present at the fete that fateful night.

This family suffered terribly after Eric's death. Edward became ill very shortly after. Elizabeth needed constant help to cope through these terrible years. Edward sadly died just under four years after the death of his son. He was laid to rest along with his son Eric in the Woodlands Cemetery in Gillingham, Kent.

Molly and her mother continued to live in the house on Watling Avenue for a number of years following the deaths of Eric and Edward. Following Molly's marriage to Leslie Blomfield the family, along with Elizabeth, would relocate to King's Lynn in Norfolk. Molly and Leslie had one child, a daughter Hilary. Hilary was born with Cerebral Palsy. Despite her challenges Hilary would become a school teacher. Sadly one day in 1985 Hillary, suffering from an undiscovered blood disorder became very ill at school. She passed away the next day.Hilary had never married and did not have any children. Molly passed away shortly after Hilary. Sadly this family line is now gone but will be forever remembered now.
