Thomas was born in Hasbury, Worcestershire, England to Benjamin Basterfield and Elizabeth Cooksey, one of their 9 children. At the time of his death he was the last one of his sibling living,none of whom ever came to the USA.
He married Agnes Coupe in Nov 1883 and they had their first child Mary Elizabeth in 1885. In the early 1890 he came to Lorain,OH and worked for several years, earning money and preparing for the arrival of is family, who came over in 1904.
