From "Aurora News-Register", Aurora, Nebraska dated Saturday, December 18, 1897, Page 2:
Our village and community was very much surprised to get the news early last Friday morning of the sudden death of J. Snodgrass. Mr. Snodgrass helped a neighbor shell corn Thursday, and retired that night apparently as well as ever. Friday morning about 5 o'clock he awoke, and was talking with Mrs. Snodgrass, saying he would get up and light the fire, but going to sleep again Mrs. S. got up and thinking her husband tired let him rest undisturbed for a time. But alas! When she would awaken him the spirit had taken its flight. Her husband was dead. Dr. Case was speedily summoned with a hope that restoratives might be successfully applied, but not so. Life was gone. Rev. F. W. Bean was telegraphed for who came and preached the funeral at the Presbyterian church on Sunday. The A. O. U. W. had charge of the obsequies and rendered all the assistance possible to the bereaved family. The church was filled to its utmost capacity, and many who would have heard the sermon could not get standing room inside. There were several beautiful wreaths of flowers laid upon the casket. Mr. Snodgrass was an old settler here and had a host of friends who followed his remains to its last resting place in Lerton cemetery. The bereaved family has the sympathy of all who know them.
