Ex-Head of Fairbanks, Morse Dies - Trustee of Beloit
Palm Beach, Fla., April 12
Robert Hosmer Morse, former board chairman of Fairbanks, Morse & Co., died last night in Palm Beach of a heart attack. He was 85 years old.
Mr. Morse also had been chairman of the board of the Robert H.Morse Corporation, Ltd., a Canadian concern. He began his career in the heavy-machinery industry with the Fairbanks, Morse Manufacturing Company in Beloit, Wis., in 1895.
Mr. Morse served in the signal Corps in World War I as a lieutenant colonel. He was a trustee of Beloit College, from which he was to receive an honorary degree in June. He made many donations to the college, including a library that bears his name.
Survivors include a son, Robert H. Morse, Jr.; a Daughter, Mrs. Barbara Morse Toth of Palm Beach, and a stepdaughter, Mrs. Wilma Douglas of Ojai, Calif.
President in 1931--
Mr. Morse held many posts with the company founded in 1891 by his father, Charles Hosmer Morse before becoming its president and general manage in 1931. In that year the company lost more that $5 million. When he became board chairman in 1950 and was succeeded as president by his on, Robert H. Morse, Jr., its earnings were in the millions.
In 1957 the elder Mr. Morse resigned as board chairman but continued as a director until his re-election the next year. This was when the Penn-Texas Corporation was seeking control of the company. The effort was later successful, and there have been subsequent reorganizations.
