Obituary for John Ihde, from the Great Falls Tribune, March 9, 2006:

Lewistown- John Leo Ihde, 88, of Lewistown, an Army veteran and bicycling enthusiast, died of natural causes Sunday (March 5, 2006) at a Lewistown hospital.
At his request, cremation has taken place. A memorial service is 2 p.m. Saturday (March 11, 2006) at the Bonanza Hills Church of the Nazarene. Cloyd Funeral Home of Lewistown is in charge of the arrangements.
He is survived by his wife of 60 years, Rosanna; eight children, David (Diane) Ihde of Stuttgart, Ark., Fred Ihde of Daly City, Calif., Rick (Esther) Ihde of Orlando, Fla., Leanna Ihde of Lewistown, Carol (John) Harwood) of Joliet, Mont., Mary Ihde of North Fort Myers, Fla., Janet (Jerry) Grinder of Cut Bank, Mont., and Rebecca (Stan) Burow of Great Falls; two brothers, William C. (Florence) Ihde of Sacramento, Calif., and Raymond (Willis) Ihde of Billings; 17 grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
John was born May 23, 1917, at Moore, the son of August and Ellen (Clark) Ihde. He spent time growing up both at his grandparents' homestead on Rock Creek, near Moore, and on his father's homestead at Cat Creek, near Winnett. He attended school at Cat Creek and Winnett, and graduated from Fergus County High School at Lewistown in 1938.
John joined the Army after high school and spent nearly five years serving in the Coastal Artillery in the Alaska Territory. His enlistment was extended due to the attack on Pearl Harbor in 1941 and he was honorably discharged in 1945.
On Oct. 6, 1945, John married Rosanna Jennie Kemp of Lewistown. They settled in Lewistown and raised their family. He worked various jobs, including Eddy's Bakery, US Gypsum Plant, road construction, and finally, at the Montana Center For The Aged, where he worked as an attendant for 17 years. After retiring, he worked at a custodian at the city library for many years.
John had a lifelong love for bicycling, and told the story many times to anyone who would listen of his 1938 trip around the state on his "balloon tire" one-speed bicycle, before he joined the Army.
In 1997, he celebrated his 80th birthday by riding 60 miles to Winnett just for the fun of it. He continued to bike until last fall when his health began deteriorating and he was no longer able to ride. John loved reading, listening to Big Band music, reminiscing about the old days and talking with old friends. One of the highlights of his life in the last few years was a trip in 2003 to visit relatives "back east" in Minnesota, Michigan, and Wisconsin. He saw old cousins and met a few new ones. He was a 61-year member of the American Legion Post 16 in Lewistown and was also a member of the Bonanza Hills Church of the Nazarene.
He was preceded in death by his parents; two brothers, Frederick in 1923 and Elwood in 2001; and one grandson, Brandon Ihde in 2002.
