According to an article in The Aurora (IL) Daily Express, Monday, June 11, 1894, Freddie "was the son of John Billings of St. Charles. His mother, Clara Hawley, was the daughter of Paul Hawley of Oswego. The boy had lived with him since eighteen months old."
This would explain why the death certificate for Freddie listed Paul and Clara Hawley as his parents. John Billings Jr. and Clara M. Hawley were married in 1868. John married Ada E. Wilcox in 1880, so apparently he and Clara had been divorced sometime before that.
