James is the son of Israel and Lydia (Gilbert) Rickey. He married Lucy Van Norman in 1847 in Chemung, NY. The family moved to WI by the time of the 1860 Fed Census and to Moscow, Iowa, WI by the 1870 Fed Census. They had ten children and were a farming family. Added info: according to a newspaper article for December 13,1901 in the "Blanchardville Blade" Obituaries it states-
"After a lingering illness of three years, death came to the relief of James Rickey, a pioneer of this vicinity and a highly respected citizen, Sunday, Dec 1, 1901, at the age of 78 years, 2 months and 10 days...
