Anna Louise Beachboard Joyce died November 2, 2010 at the age of 98 from complications of a stroke.

She was a long-time Winchester resident and retired Franklin County High School teacher.

Although she was born in Oakland, California in 1912, Mrs. Joyce and her family had deep roots in Middle Tennessee and in Winchester. Her parents were Z. P. and Alice Porter Clark Beachboard. The Beachboard and Clark families were from the Wartrace and Bell Buckle areas of Bedford County. Mrs. Joyce's maternal grandfather, R. A. Clark, was president of Winchester Normal College. After he died, the college closed and the land was donated to the city for educational purposes. Clark Memorial Elementary School is now located on the property.

Z. P. Beachboard was a teacher and high school principal, teaching in several locations in Tennessee. Alice Beachboard was killed in a car/train crash in 1918. Anna Louise and her younger sister, Jean, were raised by their father during the school year and by their great aunt, Elizabeth P. Clark, and aunt, Anna Louise Clark Moore, in the summers.

Anna Louise attended Maryville College and graduated from the University of Tennessee in 1933 with a B.S. degree and top academic honors in Home Economics. While a junior at UT, she met Thomas Franklin Joyce, Jr. at church. He had already graduated and was working for the Agricultural Extension Service. After graduation, she taught for a year in Loudon. The Knoxville Sentinel featured their 1934 wedding photo as the "tallest couple ever married in Knoxville," to their great embarrassment. Since Frank's job as farm management specialist involved extensive travel, Anna Louise returned to UT and earned her M.S. degree in Nutrition in 1936.

The couple and their first two children, Nancy and Alice Ruth, moved to Nashville for a year as Frank worked for the Selective Service making decisions on farm deferments. Jean Ann was born in Nashville. After Z. P. died, the family moved to Winchester in 1944 and Frank began his career as a farmer, Progressive Farmer writer, and agricultural leader in the Farm Bureau. In the 1960s the family's primary residence became a farm in Rutledge Hill in Coffee County although they maintained a second home on the farm on Joyce Lane in the Farris Chapel community.

Mrs. Joyce began teaching home economics at Franklin County High School in 1954 and taught for some 20 years. She retired to care for her husband, who died in 1976. At that time she moved from the Coffee County farm to a house on E. Petty Lane in Winchester. She took over his role in teaching the Sunday morning ladies' class at the Winchester Church of Christ and continued teaching the Wednesday high school girls' class. She became active in the Winchester Garden Club and loved working in her own yard and garden. In September 2008, at the age of 96, she moved to Southern Manor Living, returning to her house shortly before she died.

In addition to her parents and stepmothers, Carrie Scobey Beachboard and Pauline Finch Beachboard, her sister, Jean B. Daniell and half-brother, Scobey Beachboard predeceased her. She has two surviving half-sisters, Glenda B. Eddings of Winchester and Linda B. Carter of Smyrna and a half-brother, Bill Beachboard of Murfreesboro. Her brothers-in-law, James F. Daniell,Sr. of Winchester and John P.(Mildred)Joyce of Cottontown also survive her.

Her daughters and their spouses are Nancy and Joe Owens of Santa Monica, Ca; Alice Ruth and Richard Mischke of Grass Valley, CA; and Jean Ann and David Fox of Prescott, AZ. Grandchildren and their spouses are Rachel and Phil Cornwell of Terre Haute, IN; Rebecca and David Conant of Larkspur, CA; Christopher amd Julia Fox of Louisville, KY; and Andrew Fox of Philadelphia, PA. Great grandchildren are Wesley and Stephen Cornwell; James, Sarah and Clare Conant; and Christopher Michael and Georgia Marie Fox. Mrs. Joyce also leaves numerous cousins, nieces and nephews along with a host of friends from church and the local community.

The family wishes to thank Mrs. Joyce's caregivers, both at home and at Southern Manor Living, for their loving care during the last few years. Special thanks go to Linda Hunt and Charlotte Knott who have devoted themselves to her welfare. The care given her by Dr. James Stensby and by the staff at Southern TN Medical Center during her recent hospitalization has been exemplary.
