Russian Statesman. Born in Cherny-Otrog, Russia, he served as Russia's Prime Minister from 1992 to 1998, and as Ambassador to the Ukraine from 2001 to 2007. A member of the Communist Party of the Soviet Union (CPSU) since 1961, he served as a member of the Central Committee from 1986 to 1990, and as a member of the USSR's Supreme Soviet from 1987 to 1989. He was appointed Deputy Minister of the Soviet Union's natural gas industries beginning in 1982, and Minister of the gas ministry from 1985 to 1989. On November 6, 1996, he served briefly as acting president, during President Boris Yeltsin's heart surgery. In 2001 he was ranked by Forbes Magazine as Russia's 8th richest citizen, with an estimated fortune of 1.1 billion dollars. Following his service as Ambassador to the Ukraine, he served as a political advisor to Russian President Dmitry Medvedev.
