Virgil was the first born son of Henry Stonecipher Bayless and Irene Lucinda Keys. The family lived and farmed on the Bayless farm in Melvern Kansas. Virgil and his younger brother, Ira Murlin Bayless with the parents moved to Long Beach, California early in 1913. The family attended a Scottish Rite event celebrating Empire Day in May where Virgil was killed. He died as a result of trauma in the collapse of a public auditorium in Long Beach, California. Both parents were injured in the accident, thus were unable to travel with Virgil's body for burial in the Melvern Cemetery in Kansas.
