He was the son of Jacques Marceau and Archange Bourgeois. He married Emilie Piedalu in 1830. They had four children, three who were still living at the time of his exile. His wife Emilie died while he was awaiting trial in Montreal Gaol.
Though, he was pardoned in 1844, he decided not to return to Canada. On October 9, 1844 he married Mary Catherine Barrett in Dapto, Wollongong, Australia. They had 10 children.
