Here is a bio that was included in the family history in 1958.

Lena Caroline Neumann, the first child of William Gottlieb Neumann, was born in Saarbrucken, Germany, July 5, 1822. As the family increased in size, Lena assumed many duties of a mother to the younger children. One incident handed down portrays this love, care and responsibility she had for her brothers and sisters.
One day her brother, Valentine, went out to play in the snow. He accidently fell in a pool of water, and his new boots became water soaked. He knew it was a grave disaster, and he rushed to his sister, Lena, for security. She hung the boots in front of the fireplace to dry, but one boot became crisp and dry, because it was hung too near the fire. She went to the boot maker and told him to make one boot for Valentine, and add a little of the cost to each pair of boots the family would buy until he was repaid for this one extra boot. The parents never discovered the incident.
Whenever the children were obliged to go to a nearby village, they walked the distance on roads which were overhung with nut and fruit trees. These trees were for the public to enjoy, and anyone passing by could partake of the fruit and nuts. English walnuts grew there, and wooden presses, to extract oil for cooking purposes. The left over mixture was called "nut cake" and it was given freely to the children, which was a great treat for them.
Lena Caroline Neumann came to America with her family in 1857. She continued to help her parents, who lived on a farm near Cambridge, Illinois. Before long she married Frederick Stiefel, who was a farmer nearby. They had one son, Charles Stiefel; he lived with them until he was a young man. Since Charles had become interested in farming, he and his cousin, Fred Neumann, went by train and settled on a farm East of Creighton, Nebraska. In a short time he sent for his parents, Lena and Frederick Stiefel, who lived with him until they died.
