Obituary from the Field Tidings
Ooltewah, Tennessee
March 30, 1927

Solon M. Jacobs was born Oct. 7, 1846, near Tonawanda, N. Y., and died Mar. 7, 1927, in Graysville, Tenn. He was married Apr. 17, 1869, to Mariett Millard, and to them were born three children; Lewen A., for many years engaged in our educational work; Clara L., wife of Eld. Alonzo B. Russell, pastor of the Mobile, Ala. church; and Dr. Burton L. Jacobs, of Chattanooga, Tenn.

Father Jacobs was converted in 1882, and united with the Seventh-day Adventist church in Fontanelle, Iowa. He was soon asked to take up work in the conference, and for many years was district supervisor and field secretary of the Iowa Conference. In 1896, he was asked by the General Conference to take charge of the new school just started for the colored people at Huntsville, Ala.; so in April of that year he and his family moved to what is now Oakwood Junior College. For six years he and his faithful companion labored there, and by their consistent lives and friendly spirit broke down prejudice and laid the foundation for the successful work now being carried forward at Oakwood.

He also served as treasurer for Cumberland Conference, and was a member of the conference committee for years.

He was laid to rest in Fairview Cemetery at Graysville to await the call of the Life-giver. He sleeps, but his works do follow him.

His wife, three children, three grandchildren and other relatives and friends are left to mourn.

The funeral was held in the S. D. A. church at Graysville by the writer, assisted by Elder F. C. Webster and Prof. J. A. Tucker.

V. B. Watts.
