Carl R. Christensen, of Durham, N.C., formerly of Montross, Va., died Friday, October 2, 2009, at the age of 91.
Born and raised in Highland Springs, Va., Carl served as a First Lieutenant in World War 11 and was awarded the Bronze Star and the Purple Heart. Carl was also awarded the French Battle Metal, Croix de Guerre by the French Government.
He graduated from Medical College of Virginia, School of Pharmacy, in 1950. Upon moving to Montross in 1955, "Doc C" was a pharmacist and partner at People's Drug Store.
He was a respected member of the community, serving as Mayor, Justice of the Peace, and member of the Town Council. He was also a Commander of American Legion Post 252.
An active member of Andrew Chapel United Methodist Church, he served in various capacities and sang baritone in the choir. He was an avid fisherman and woodworker and had a lifelong passion for national politics.
Mr. Christensen was preceded in death by his parents, Nels Peter and Mattie Marie Christensen, and brothers, Holger and Arne Christensen.
He is survived by his wife, of 63 years, Estelle O'Connell Christensen of Durham;daughters, Carol Christensen Ergenbright of Maryville, Tenn., and husband Bob, Ann Marie Christensen Of Durham, and husband Allen Duffer, son, Erik Christensen of Charlotte, N.C.; four grandchildren, Kirsten Craft and husband Matt, Rob Ergenbright and wife, Amanda, Matt Duffer and Ross Duffer; and two great-grandchilren, Reed Craft and Raleigh Craft. He is also survived by a sister, Elna Wells of Jacksonville, Fla.
Services were held October 6, 2009 at Andrew Chapel United Methodist Church with burial following in the church cemetery.
