1846 – 1916

Dictated to Caroline Larson Flatgaard
Mikkel was born at Loftus, mo, Telemark, Norway, January 24, 1872. He came to his uncle Ole Jore, at Union ND on May 24, 1893, exactly one month after he left Norway on April 24, 1893. The port to which he came was Quebec, Canada. If he had said he was going to Minnesota, he would not have been sent thru Canada to Winnipeg and then to Edinburg, North Dakota. He walked from Edinburg to Union following the railroad track. The shipping line he doesn't know, but he says the boat from Oslo, Norway to England was "Montebello", and the boat from England to Quebec, he says was "Sarina". He does not know the year he took out naturalization papers. He was here and staked out the homestead so it should show May 16, 1896, or May 17. He was back in Erskine May 18. The place where he was in 1956 when you were visiting was not the homestead. After staking out the homestead he went to Crookston so it would show May 16, 1896.
He was married in North Dakota in 1893, in June or July. Mother's name was Gunda Bjornstad. Her father was Knut Riis. He and another man, a cousin, bought "Bjorntveit" close to Porsgrund. Knut named his land "Bjornstad" and his cousin named his "Bjornhold". So since Gunda was born there she used the name Bjornstad. Mother's sister Sofie (Mrs. Torjus Larson) said all the children used the name Bjornstad. Mother died in June 19, 1905. …He will be 94 in January. His eyesight is almost gone, so he doesn't move around much, but is feeling all right. It keeps us right at home, unless we get my sister to stay with him.
Signed
