John was the sixth of twelve children of Samuel Baldwin, a farmer of Franklin Twp., Hunterdon Co., New Jersey, and his wife Mariah Marshall Baldwin. He lived in Franklin Twp. all of his life.

He married Susan S. Rea on Dec. 2, 1854 in Hunterdon Co. They had seven children: George in 1852, Lillian in 1855, Annetta about 1856, Alexander E. about 1862, Judson L. about 1864, Bonnell in 1866 and Amy Rea in 1870. Only the middle three survived to adulthood.

John was a moulder in the 1850 census. (A moulder makes moulds for iron castings or bricks.) Thereafter, his occupation was listed as a miller.
