"Mendocino Beacon," 2 March 1889; Fort Bragg Items -- Editor Beacon:
James Jorden [sic], the contractor and builder of the Baptist church, which is being erected in this place, met with a fatal accident last Saturday afternoon. He was upon a scaffold, which was insecurely built, and it gave way, precipitating him to the ground. He fell a distance of 72 feet, striking his head and shoulders on a stay. The unfortunate man was carried home insensible, in which condition he lay until he died Sunday evening about 7 o'clock. Deceased leaves a wife and five children to mourn his loss. He came from Cloverdale to this place.

The churches here are doing good work by adding to their numbers. The Baptists immersed seven last Sunday in Pudding Creek. (Courtesy of Held Poage Research Library, Ukiah, CA)

"Sonoma County Tribune," 16 March 1889, pg 4, col 2:
Jas. Jordan, who formerly resided in Cloverdale, fell 72 feet from a church which he was building in Fort Bragg and was instantly killed. (Sonoma County Library)

1889 March 21 "Lawrence Chieftain" (Mount Vernon), page 3:
Our townsman, R. W. Jordan, received a letter last week conveying to him the sad intelligence that his brother James, who resides in San Francisco [sic - lived in Fort Bragg], California, had been accidentally killed on the 4th [sic-should read 24th] of February. He was a contractor and builder and was engaged at work on a building when the scaffolding gave way, precipitating him to the ground, from which fall he received injuries which caused his death the following day. The deceased visited his aged mother and brothers, residing in this county, last September for the first time in seventeen years. He was noted for his kind and gentle disposition and good traits of head and heart. He left a wife and four [sic] children.
