He died in Danville Indiana where his wife and family lived. Henry lived near an historic cemetery and church near his property in Danville IN and we believe he is buried there with his wife Sarah Hill.

Henry was born August 15, 1800 in Mercer County Kentucky. He was the 7th of 9 children. At the age of 4 his father, Daniel South, moved him and his family north to Jackson Township, Clermont County, Ohio. There they lived with long time friends and close family. Henry was raised in the early pioneer environment of Clermont County. They lived in log cabins, hunting was their main stay for food and eventually, they cleared land and became farmers.

In 1828, at the age of 28 years, Henry married Sarah Hill. Her family lived in the adjacent township, Stonelick Township. Sarah’s father, Thomas Hill and her mother Rebecca Douthit brought their family from Rowan County, North Carolina, to Stonelick Township.

Henry and Sarah had five children: Daniel (1826-1862), Thomas (1828-1865), Archibald (1830-1864), Nathan H (1831-1851) and Benjamin F (1834-1909). Each of Henry and Sarah’s children were born in Jackson Township. Between 1840 and 1850, Henry moved his family to Brownsburg, Indiana, in Hendricks County. Between 1850 and 1860 Henry, Sarah and their children moved to Danville, Indiana.

Henry’s son Thomas married Matilda Free Davis (1828-1916) and they had two daughters that survived into adulthood. Archibald married Avy M Goudy (1834-) unknown children.

Both their sons Thomas H South (1828-1865) and Archibald South (1830-1864) served the United States of America, honorably, in the Civil War. Thomas and Archibald made their ultimate sacrifice through bravery and dignity as soldiers for the Union. The information for each of them is on the next page.

Henry and Sarah’s son Nathan H (1832-1851) lived a short life and died at the age of 19. Their youngest son Benjamin F (1834-1909) married Margaret (1838-) and they had 4 children. Benjamin and his family lived near his parents in Brownsburg, IN. Daniel B, their oldest child married Martha Duncan (1829-1871) and they had 2 children. Daniel and his family lived in Hendricks County IN near his parents.

Henry D South died in 1869. He saw the passing of all of his children except his youngest son, Benjamin. Henry D South and his wife Sarah Hill had five remarkable children. Those impressive children must have had some amazing parents.

I assume that Henry and wife Sarah are buried at one of the cemeteries in Danville, Indiana although there is no surviving record. They owned property in Danville when Henry died and Sarah was living with her daughter Moretta Nichols in Danville when she died.
