AUSTIN -- A funeral Mass will be celebrated for Gerald F. "Jerry" Pieper, 77, of 111 12th St. N.E., Austin, at noon Wednesday in Queen of Angels Catholic Church, the Rev. Virgil Duellman officiating. Burial will be in Calvary Cemetery with military rites by American Legion Post #91 and VFW Post #1216.

Mr. Pieper died Sunday evening (July 4, 1999) in Austin Medical Center.

He was born Jan. 28, 1922, in Newhall, Iowa. He served in the Army during WWII, from 1940 to 1944, in North Africa, Sicily and Italy, and was awarded the Purple Heart. He married Mildred Ulwelling in Rose Creek on April 22, 1944. They farmed in the Rose Creek area until 1958 when he began working for the Austin School District, retiring in 1980. He enjoyed woodworking and working with stained glass.

Surviving are his wife; a son, Michael of Rochester; two daughters, Carol (Mrs. Gary) Forrester of Austin and Linda Pieper of Austin; four grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; a brother, Vincent of Rose Creek; and three sisters, Darlene Risius of Ironwood, Mich., Theresa (Mrs. Philip) Kitzman of Hurley, Wis., and Betty Jean Spratte of Vinton, Iowa. He was preceded in death by a brother.

Friends may call from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. today at Mayer Funeral Home where there will be a 7 p.m. wake service, and from 10 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. Wednesday. There will be no reviewal.
