Philip C. Riley
Philip C. Riley, 83 Navy Veteran, Judo / Karate Expert Philip C. Riley, 83. Of Norwood. Died November 2, 2010 at Southeastern Veterans Center in Chester Co. Born in Phila., he was a resident of Norwood for 10 years until moving to the Veterans Center 6 years ago. A US Navy veteran of WWII, Mr. Riley served as a Machinist Mate in the American, European, African and Middle Eastern Theaters of Operation. He also served in the Normandy Invasion. Following his Naval enlistment, he joined the Merchant Marines and served for 10 years including the Korean Conflict. Mr. Riley was honored in 1991 by the Ridley Schools, having left High School to enlist in the Navy; he was given a long overdue diploma. A student of Martial Arts, Mr. Riley was a 3rd degree black belt in Judo, a 1st degree black belt in Karate and served as an instructor in both Judo and Jiu-Jitsu. He had been active in the Upper Darby Police Youth Assoc. Martial Arts Program. Mr. Riley was a Stationary Engineer and Boilermaker in the manufacturing industry, having worked at Rohm & Haas Pharmaceuticals, Jack Frost Sugar Co. and Lankenau Hospital. He had also worked at Allenwood Steel Co. Mr. Riley was a member of the American Legion and VFW. He was the father of the late Kevin Riley, who died in 1991 Survivors: His wife of 40 years Margaret Gallagher Riley; children Margie Evans of Norwood, Philip C.
