Wendell C. Hartmann, 95, of Poway, died October 17, 2009, at Sunshine Care. He was born August 28, 1914, in Cavour, SD, and moved to Anderson, IN, when he was 18 months old and lived almost his entire life there before moving to Poway 18 months ago to be near his daughter, Diane.

One of the last of the great gentlemen of his generation, he was well-known for his sense of humor and his personal and professional integrity. He lived at Gateway Gardens before moving to Sunshine Care and was beloved by the third Tuesday Bunco group of Wednesday, Etc., where he sometimes played.

He graduated from Anderson High School in Indiana in 1933 and International Business College. His wife, Mary Kathryn, and he were married June 29, 1940, and she died in 2002. They were lifelong members of the First United Methodist Church of Anderson.

He went to work for Greer Steel Company in 1935 and worked there until they closed in 1964, holding many different job assignments in that business. He worked as an administrative vice-president at First Savings and Loan in Anderson from 1964 to 1982. In 1985 he began working for Surbaugh & Son as a real estate broker. He was proud of the fact that from the age of 14 to the age of 85, he never went a day without a job.

He is a former member of the Anderson Rotary Club and had been a member of the Anderson Country Club, B.P.O. Elks Lodge and Mount Moriah Masonic Lodge. He was also a volunteer at St. John's Health System in Anderson. .

Services were conducted Tuesday, October 27, at Guilkey Funeral Home, Anderson, with the Rev. William Mathys officiating. Burial was in Maplewood Cemetery, Anderson, IN, followed by a luncheon at the First United Methodist Church.

Memorial contributions may be made to the  American Cancer Society  or the First United Methodist Church of Anderson, IN. Published in the Ramona Sentinel newspaper.
