Emmert Martin served as a Private in Company A, 9th Battalion, Ohio Volunteer Infantry during the Spanish-American War.

He died of disease in the fall of 1898 at Camp Meade, near Middletown, Pennsylvania.

He was interred in the Gettysburg National Cemetery on November 6, 1898.

He is one of only 5 African-American soldiers to be buried in the Civil War section of the cemetery.
