Gen was the daughter of John Clement Parsons & Mary Alice McDowell. She grew up in Santa Rosa and Vallejo. As a child, she played in Luther Burbank's yard. She was very influenced by him and had a life-long love of plants. At one time, she had over 2000 African Violets in her home. She married Champlain Hastings Castle on 18 September 1943 in San Francisco & they had 4 children. Gen loved to sew. She had learned from her mother who had been a milliner in her mother's shop as a girl. Gen's girls always had the prettiest dresses. After she got sick, she took great joy in watching all the birds in her garden.

She has a cenotaph in the cemetery where Champ is buried.
