Elmer Bowman, one of the last real cowboys, passed away peacefully in his sleep Oct. 31, 2010 at the age of 92.

Born in Midvale, Idaho, to Samuel and Margaret Bowman on May 26, 1918, Elmer was raised in the Crane Creek and Ola areas. He met and married the love of his life, Hilma Elizabeth Cooper, in 1940. They spent their first summer together on West Mountain living in a tent, working for the USFS. He packed supplies to lookout towers and firefighters in the Landmark and Salmon River area.

He went to work for long-time friend and rancher, David Little and Little Cattle Company in 1943. Elmer and Hilma spent many happy summers running the cattle in the mountains of Valley County, and winters on the Van Duesen Ranch in Emmett.

He retired after 40+ years, and worked part-time for Jim and Brad Little and Harry Bettis until he really retired at age 89.

Dad was preceded in death by his wife of 54 years, a daughter and a granddaughter, and two brothers.

He is survived by his son, Dale Bowman (Patti), of Emmett; daughters, Karen Angle (Rocky), of Plano, Texas, Marilyn Helle (Jack), of Juneau, Alaska, and Verla Cherman (Alan), of Laguna Woods, California; and several grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Services will be held Friday, Nov. 5, at 2:00 P.M. at Potter Funeral Chapel in Emmett. Burial will follow at the Emmett Cemetery.
