Elisha Paxton was the son of William Paxton and Eleanor Hays. He married Margaret "Peggy" McNutt, the daughter of Alexander McNutt and Rachel Grigsby, on 3 Aug 1809, in Rockbridge Co., VA. It was officiated by Rev. David Blain. Paxton bible confirms date.

They had known Paxton children (7 in Elisha's 1866 will plus John G and Mary Louisa Ellis in the family bible):

William Hays, 1 Apr 1811, (Rebecca Louisa Stith & Mary J Gillespie) below
Alexander McNutt, 17 Mar 1814 (Mary Louisa Ellis), below
Andrew Jackson, 18 Mar 1816 (Hannah Mary Beasley), below
James Gardner, 4 Nov 1821 - 1870 (Anna M), below
Rachel Eleanor McNutt, 4 Mar 1825 - 25 Jul 1865 (John Wm E. Buckner)
Elizabeth A. (unmarried in 1866 will)
Elisha Franklin "Bull", Gen., 24 Mar 1828, below
John Gallatin, 19 Nov 1830

On the 1850 Dist. 51, Rockbridge Co., VA census, I found farmer Elisha Paxton, 66, with $20K in real estate; Margaret Paxton, 57 and farmer John G Paxton, 18, all VA born. (John Gallatin Paxton is not their son, 9 Nov 1832 - 15 Sep 1859 in MS)

The Paxtons: Their Origin in Scotland, and Their Migrations Through England and Ireland, to the Colony of Pennsylvania, whence They Moved South and West, and Found Homes in Many States and Territories" by M W Paxton, MO, 1903, P 268-269 on Elisha Paxton. Has data on this family and many others.

On 24 Dec 1866, Elisha wrote his will that was probated in Rockbridge Co., VA. James Compton and G W Shields made oaths, that they witnessed the will signing on 2 Dec 1867 but it was recorded by the Rockbridge Co. Clerk of the Court on 2 Mar 1868. It includes his heirs as follows:

"I direct that my estate which may remain after the payment of my debts be divided into six equal parts which I devise and bequeath as follows: One sixth part to my son WILLIAM H. Paxton, one sixth part to my son ALEXANDER M. Paxton, One sixth part to my son ANDREW J. Paxton, one sixth part to my son JAMES G. Paxton, one sixth part to the children of my deceased daughter RACHEL E. M. Buckner to be divided among them as follows: two tenths to ELISHA Paxton Buckner, two tenths to CALEN Buckner, three tenths to MALLIE Buckner, and three tenths to MOLLIE Buckner, and the remaining one sixth part of my estate to the children of my deceased son ELISHA F Paxton to be divided equally among them."

"Fifth, I give my gold watch to my son WILLIAM H. Paxton. My "sliver" (silver) and silver plate to my grand daughter MALLIE Buckner and my family portraits to my son JAMES G. Paxton and direct that my executors have five copies of said portraits made and delivered one set to my son WILLIAM H. Paxton, one set to my son ALEXANDER M. Paxton, one set to my son ANDREW J. Paxton, one set to my daughter ELIZABETH A. Paxton, and one set to my grand son ELISHA Paxton Buckner."

The Rockbridge Co., VA Death Register says farmer Elisha Paxton, was born and died in Rockbridge, aged 83 years on 21 Nov 1867 of old age. Mrs. J Paxton reported. It says he was single but was a widower.

My family saved Elisha's personal copy of the 23 Nov 1848 Valley Star, a Lexington, VA newspaper. It has "E. PAXTON" handwritten across the top. In it, was the obituary of his brother in law, Gov. Alexander G. McNutt, from the Mississippian newspaper. I have other old newspapers, that include the inked in name of the subscriber at the top, like this one. I suspect it was the newspaper boy's job to do this.

There is a great article on his old Paxton House online, giving family details. Its on the National Register of Historic Places, titled Glen Maury, though it was also called Glen Mary. The 2 story brick home is located in Buena Vista in Glen Maury Park. In about the 1920's, a two story ell (or L) addition was added on, expanding it to about 6000 sf. I also found a You Tube video tour of the house, published on May 23, 2013, during a renovation. It was called The Paxton House in Buena Vista, Virginia: May 2013. Plus, there is also a Paxton House Historical Society of Buena Vista, VA on Facebook. They lease it from the current owner, the City of Buena Vista. The Paranormal Society even has photos and recordings of the home, but believe "we do not want to classify the home as HAUNTED, but we feel that some sort of activity is occurring." The Proceedings of the Rockbridge Historical Society, Vol. 12, 1995-200, page 163-175 includes an article titled the Early History of the Paxton House at Glen Maury. Elisha has his own page on Wikipedia as well. There's something for everyone.

I see a lot of sites adding a middle name for Elisha as Hays or Hayes. However, I have not located it in original records.
