James Edward "Ned" Burkholder enjoyed spending time out-of-doors and fishing in mountain lakes.

He was the son of James H. and Sarah Burkholder, owners of the Hotel de Paris, Burkholder Hardware, and an opera house in Georgetown, Colorado.

His father James H. died the year before Ned and his younger sister Hazel Mary Helen graduated from Georgetown High School. The commencement exercises of 1907 took place in their mother Sarah's opera house (possibly on the 3rd floor of the Cushman Block). Colorado Governor Henry Augustus Buchtel gave the address and awarded the diplomas. The graduation celebration took place at Hotel de Paris.

Ned attended the Colorado State Normal School (now the University of Northern Colorado) at Greeley, Colorado. The Normal School trained qualified teachers to meet a vital need for the state's public schools.

He also served in World War I in the Twelfth U.S. Infantry. He played the clarinet and was a Musician-Third Class.

After WWI, Ned worked as a miner in both Colorado and Pennsylvania. He was also employed by the Pennsylvania Forestry Service.

Ned contracted tuberculosis in the Capital Prize Mine in Georgetown and died at West Side Sanitarium in York, Pennsylvania.
