Gene Hammond passed away peacefully on January 5, 2010, after a courageous and determined battle with pulmonary fibrosis. He was born on November 9, 1931, in Saltillo, Texas, and was the son of Homer and Grace Anderson Hammond.
Gene is survived by (snipped for the living's privacy)
Upon high school graduation, Gene left the cotton fields of East Texas for the big city, and lived in Dallas for the rest of his life. He soon met and married Jimmie Mullins, and they celebrated their 58th anniversary in November 2009. One week before his wedding, Gene started a used-car business with Al Morgan, a partnership that lasted until Al's death 45 years later. Gene continued to run Al Morgan Auto Sales until his retirement in 2006. Upon Gene's retirement, Al Morgan Auto Sales had been in business for 55 years, the longest continuously owned and operated used-car dealership in Dallas County to that time. In 2001, Gene was inducted into the Dallas County Automobile Dealers Association Hall of Fame. Gene loved business, baseball, boating, water-skiing, parasailing, country music, Dean Martin, rose gardening, and sharing his quietly devastating sense of humor. Gene Hammond was never known to say an unkind word about anyone, and it is a testimony to his character that no one ever had an unkind word to say about him.
Visitation will be held on Saturday, January 9, from 4:00 to 6:00 p.m., and funeral services are scheduled for Sunday, January 10, at 12:30 p.m., at Restland, 9220 Restland Drive, Dallas, Texas. Memorials may be made to the Pulmonary Fibrosis Foundation.
