A Civil War veteran, he enlisted in Cumberland County May 8, 1861, mustered into federal service at Harrisburg July 27 as a private with Co. H, 7th Pennsylvania Reserves (36th Pennsylvania Infantry), and promoted to corporal, date as yet unknown. Fom spring of 1862 through the next year he spent much of the time sick in a variety of hospitals. Returning to duty, he was captured at the battle of the Wilderness May 5, 1864, incarcerated in the stockade at Andersonville, Georgia, and later transferred to the stockade at Florence, South Carolina. Paroled December 11, 1864 at Charleston, he was forwarded to Camp Parole, Annapolis, Maryland, where he received a furlough home to recover from a raging case of dysentery, honorably discharging the service to date June 16, 1864. His younger brother Joseph Anthony Durnbaugh served in the same company.
He spent several years in Illinois after the war before returning to Mechanicsburg but by 1880 was residing in Harrisburg. He then moved to Virginia where he died in Poquoson, York County. His surname was also spelled "Dornbaugh."
