LUCY GRIEGO

CARLSBAD--The funeral for Lucy Garcia Griego, 72, of South Mesa Street, will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday at San Jose Catholic Church, with the Rev. Valentine Jankowski officiating. Burial will follow at Carlsbad Cemetery.

Pallbearers will be Israel Figueroa, Marty Bravo, Manuel Sillas, Frank Columbani, Bob Hernandez and Carmen Vasquez.
Honorary pallbearers are Clara Haley and the staff and residents of Lakeview Christian Home of the Southwest, Northgate Unit.

Visitation will be 7:30 p.m. today at San Jose Catholic Church.

Mrs. Griego died Monday, March 20, 2000 at Lakeview Christian Home.

Denton-Fuunchess Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Lucy Garcia Griego was born Oct. 7, 1927, to Manuel D. Sr. and Simona Herrera Garcia in Wichita Falls, Texas. The family moved to Carlsbad when she was 1. She grew up in the Carlsbad and Otis areas. She attended school at Otis and graduated from Carlsbad High School in 1950. On Feb. 18, 1950, she married Santana Griego. She worked as a checker at Carlsbad Steam Laundry, a meat wrapper at Furr's, an alteration seamstress at Anthony's and a cashier at the Five and Dime Store, retiring in 1975. She was a member of the Catholic Daughters of America and was active with the North Mesa Senior Citizens Center. Her hobbies included ceramics, crocheting, sewing and bingo.

Mrs. Griego was preceded in death by a brother, Manuel S. Garcia Jr., her husband; and a son, George Griego.

She is survived by Rudy Griego of Carlsbad; three daughters, Gloria Jean Mendoza and Gracie Najar, both of Roswell, and Patsy Ybarra of Carlsbad; a brother, Lupe Garcia of Carlsbad; two sisters, Emma Martinez of Carlsbad and Pam Gonzalez of Washington, D.C.; 11 grandchildren' and 2 great-grandchildren.
