Clarence E. "Gene" Hoyer, of Akron, died on Tuesday, February 10, 2009, at the age of 81.
He was born to Clarence P. and Georgia E. Hoyer on September 28, 1927, in Akron, Colorado.
During his early years, he attended country schools near Akron. He also attended high school in Akron.
On his 17th birthday, he enlisted in the United States Navy and served on an aircraft carrier in the South Pacific. At the end of the war, he was honorably discharged and returned to Akron.
He was very proud to have served his country and remained in contact with many shipmates from the U. S. S. Casablanca.
On July 20, 1952, he married Wilma Jefferson.
From this union, two sons were born.
Gene worked for the Soil Conservation Service until he retired in 1985. After his retirement, he farmed on a part-time basis and served on the board of the Akron Soil Conservation District.
Gene loved the outdoors and being with his horses. From the time he rode a horse to school as a young child until a few years before he died, he owned and trained horses. His happiest times were spent in the saddle, team roping with friends or working cattle.
Gene was a member of the Akron Methodist Church. He felt truly blessed by the many friendships he formed as a member of the church.
Gene is survived by his wife of 56 years, his sons, his grandson, granddaughter, his sister-in-laws, his brother-in-law and many nieces, nephews and cousins.
Gene was preceded in death by his parents, Clarence and Georgia; his brothers, Lee and Eldon; his sisters, Edith Schmidt and Lena Peek; and, his sister-in-law, Doris Grooms Haines.
A funeral service was held Saturday, February 14, 2009, at the United Methodist Church in Akron, Colorado. A private family inurnment will be held at a later date.
Memorials may be made to the Akron Methodist Church, Hospice of the Plains or St. Jude Children's Hospital.
