His father was Lorenzo Taft Benson (born 3 Aug 1863, Logan, Cache County, Utah); mother was Margaret Ann Morgan (born 26 Feb 1862, Cheshire, New Haven County, Connecticutt).

He was confirmed by his grandfather, Thomas Morgan, and was ordained by Henry H. Rawlings as a high priest of the LDS Church in Logan on 19 March 1944. He was a veteran of the US Army in World War I. He was married to the former Miss Myrtle Levernon Inglet, and they had five children. His sister, Lucy Morgan Benson, was born 23 May 1905 in Logan, Utah.
