He was 12 years old when his mother died. He was called on a mission in 1899. He went to the Southwestern States Mission. This included parts of Texas and up to Kansas
While he was on his mission the family moved to St David. He met Emma Lofgreen there when he returned from his mission. The story is told that he was invited to stay the night at Lofgreen's house one night because of a driving rain storm. So he ran home through the rain to get his pajamas. He denies that story.
They lived in Douglas for 4 months and then tried farming in St. David. They finally ended up moving back to Mesa.
He was called to the Bishop of 2nd ward in Mesa. He was Bishop for 25 years. When he was released Apostle Melvin J. Ballard came to speak at sacrament meeting.
