Clarence Dana was born in Mesa AZ. He was the first white boy born in the new settlement of Mesa. However the family didn't like the heat and moved to St. Johns Arizona when he was 3. . He was 12 years old when his mother died. He was called on a mission in 1899. He went to the Southwestern States Mission. This included parts of Texas and up to Kansas
While he was on his mission the family moved to St David. He met Emma Lofgreen there when he returned from his mission. The story is told that he was invited to stay the night at Lofgreen's house one night because of a driving rain storm. So he ran home through the rain to get his pajamas. He denies that story.
They lived in Douglas for 4 months and then tried farming in St. David. They finally ended up moving back to Mesa.
He was called to the Bishop of 2nd ward in Mesa. He was Bishop for 25 years. When he was released Apostle Melvin J. Ballard came to speak at sacrament meeting.
Delbert Stapley was in his ward while growing up. One day Clarence as riding down Broadway on his horse. He saw Delbert playing with a group of boys in a vacant field. As he passed something said to him. "Go Call Delbert on a mission". He turned his horse and did just that. Delbert was later called to be an apostle
He was state Dairy commissioner in 1920.
He sold Beneficial Life Insurance for years, until one of his clients was denied a claim he felt was right and he wouldn't sell for them anymore. He became interested in land speculation around Goodyear, but the land deal was a failure. He then worked for New York Life Insurance. He also tried the service station business, school custodian and finally was the head gardener at Southside Hospital. . Clarence died in a automobile accident two years after his wife's death when his car plowed into the back of a truck, that slowed to make a turn without signaling.
