He is believed to be the son of Robert Welch.
He served 6 months and 5 days as a private in the 4th Regiment (Bayley's) East Tennessee Militia under Capt. John Brock in the War of 1812.
Before his marriage to Mary "Polly" Clarkston, he had two children out of wedlock by Margaret Addington. The children were Andrew Jackson Addington and Elizabeth Addington.
He married Mary "Polly" Clarkston Jan. 22, 1820, in the Rob Camp Church, Claiborne County, Tennessee.
They were the parents of George W., James W., Sterling, William, Henry Lee, Tandy H., Marion J., Nancy Jane, Sarah C. "Sally," Mary, Mahala, Elizabeth R., Millie, Robert C., Susan A., Stephen B., and Rebecca Welch.
