Mrs. Howard L. Smith, 99, Jefferson's oldest resident and a former civic and social leader in Madison, died Sunday night after a long illness. She was the widow of Howard L. Smith, former professor of law at the University of Wisconsin. He died in 1941. A talented musician and artist, Mrs. Smith was the first teacher of Georgia O'Keeffe, famous American artist who, like Mrs. Smith, was born in Sun Prairie.Mrs. Smith and her husband were travel enthusiasts and visited practically every country on the globe. After Prof. Smith's retirement from the University of Wisconsin, the couple spent much of their time at their winter home in Key West, FL. Upon his death, she moved to Jefferson. During her years in Madison, Mrs. Smith was active with the University League, the Woman's Club, and many other oganizations. She was a member of Grace Episcopal Church. Surviving are a sister, Mrs. Frank Ritchie of Jefferson and a brother, William Mann of Bremerton, WA. Funeral services were to be held at 9 a.m. today in St. Mary's Episcopal Church, Jefferson, the Rev. Lawrence Brenton officiating. Graveside services were to be held at 10:30 a.m. in the Sun Prairie Cemetery.
