Hazel Mary Helen Burkholder spent most of her life associated with Hotel de Paris in Georgetown, Colorado. Her parents James H. and Sarah purchased the property when Hazel was 14 years old. She spent many important occasions in the hotel, including her graduation celebration and wedding reception.

Her father James died the year before Hazel and her older brother James Edward "Ned" graduated from Georgetown High School. The commencement exercises of 1907 took place in Sara Burkholder's opera house (possibly on the 3rd floor of the Cushman Block). Colorado Governor Henry Augustus Buchtel gave the address and awarded the diplomas. The graduation celebration took place at Hotel de Paris.

Hazel attended the Colorado State Normal School (now the University of Northern Colorado) at Greeley, Colorado and belonged to Alpha Chi Omega women's fraternity. The Normal School trained qualified teachers to meet a vital need for the state's public schools.

It was in her mother's opera house that Hazel's future husband Ralph Thomas McAdams of Salina, Kansas initially saw her. The double porch of Hotel de Paris was where Ralph first put his arm around Hazel when they were sitting together on a woven wire seat. In 1911, they married. Less than a year and half later, Ralph died and was buried in Salina. Hazel never remarried.

In 1932, Hazel inherited Hotel de Paris upon her mother Sarah's death. She leased the hotel as a boarding house until 1939.

In 1954, she sold the property and its contents to the National Society of Colonial Dames in the State of Colorado for use as a museum.
