Founder of Burtschi & Co. which handled real estate and insurance. Built over 800 houses in Decatur beginning in 1908. He was the largest individual proprietor of dwellings in the city.

Member of Knights of Columbus, St. James Catholic church and the Booster club of St. Teresa high school. He was a president of the Decatur Savings Building & Loan association and also had banking interests in Oklahoma.

Died in a Dumas, Ark. hospital of pneumonia while recovering from injuries received in an auto accident near there.

Born in Vandalia, IL, where his parents settled after coming from Switzerland in 1865. His father died when he was 11 years old. He married Miss Martha Stephan in Decatur on Nov. 12, 1912.

He leaves his wife; daughters Mrs. J. P. Bretz, Mrs. Loren Hodge, Jr., Sarah Elizabeth Burtschi and Lucy Ann Burtschi, all of Decatur; sons Julius R. of Chickasha, Okla., and Robert and Jack of Decatur; five grandchildren; brothers Joseph C. of Vandalia, Daniel of Mattoon, and Martin of Chickasha, Okla.
