Niels E. Sorensen, 84, passed away Monday, Oct. 11, 2010.
He was born Feb. 4, 1926, in Chicago, to Danish immigrants Niels C. and Kristiane Hansen Sorensen.
From his mother, he inherited sentimentality, a romantic heart, love of music and his singing voice, which he used as a member of a barbershop quartet. His affinity for wood and the hands to shape it came from his father. He began an apprenticeship to become a wood pattern maker during World War II before being drafted into the U.S. Army in 1945.
He served as a guard at a military hospital in New Jersey for a short time, then returned home and finished his apprenticeship attending IIT. He was drafted during the Korean War and served three years as a sergeant of the medical corps in Seoul, Korea. Using the GI bill benefit, he became a graduate of Wilbur Wright College but returned to the trade of pattern making at which he excelled.
Most of his life he worked for Arrow Pattern and Foundry. He was very proud of the years he served as president of the Chicago chapter of the industrial Pattern Makers Assoc., helping to secure insurance and retirement benefits for the members. Because of his exceptional talent in his trade, he was asked to travel for a job in Waterloo, Iowa. It was there he met his wife, Betty. They married in 1965 in Oak Park. He used his talent to beautify each of their homes. He made a number of pieces of furniture, some of which stayed with the homes and others that will be treasured and passed on.
He and his wife moved to Algonquin in 1988, where he became involved in conservation of the environment and politics. This led to his election into the precinct committee and the Algonquin township board, where he served for 14 years, becoming affectionately known as "senator."
He is survived by his wife of 45 years, M. Elizabeth "Betty" Sorensen; his children, Sharyl (Michael) Gliva of Longmont, Colo., and David (Sheila York) Marold of Northville, Mich.; his grandchildren, Eric (Andrea) Gliva of Loveland, Colo., Samuel Gliva of Loveland, Christopher Marold of Berkley, Mich., Erick (Marisa) Marold of W. Bloomfield, Mich., and Kevin (Samantha) Marold of Beaverton, Ore.; his older sisters, Karen Kallis and twin, Ethel Patrick; his nieces, Christine Kallis and Ingrid (Wilbert) Schulze; his nephew, Leonard (Martyne) Patrick; and his grandnephews.
The visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. Friday, Oct. 15, in the Wait Ross Allanson Funeral & Cremation Services Chapel, 201 S. Main St., Algonquin. A memorial service will be at 12:30 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 16, at the Cary Grove Evangelical Free Church, 525 W. Ada St., Cary, with the Rev. Donald Erikson officiating. Burial will be private Saturday at Acacia Park Cemetery, Chicago. For information, call the church at 847-639-7566.
