Married Jane on 4 April 1876, in Fayette County, Indiana

In the 1860 census, David was 33, living in Kansas City, Jackson County,
Missouri, working as a printer. He was single then, living with him was an 18
year old printer and a 16 year old printer's apprentice. Mr. Abeel was the
first publisher of the Kansas City Journal-Post. It operated above a tavern at
Main Street at the Missouri River in the River Market neighborhood.

He married Jane on 4 April 1876, in Fayette County, Indiana. They had seven children, James, Lola, Winifred, Ethel, Edwin, Shirley and one had died prior to the 1900 census.

In 1900 David and Jane were running the Sea Beach Hotel in Santa Cruz and had about 19 employees, who were from several different countries. There is a
wonderful article by Ross Eric Gibson and photo of the hotel and it mentions D. K. Abeel. It starts out by saying, "In the 1890s, the castle-like Sea Beach
Hotel was listed among the state's top seven coastal resorts ..." Sadly the hotel burned to the ground in 1912, but the Abeel family was living in Sonoma
County by the 1910 census.
